The Next Big Thing in Beauty? 3 Totally Awesome Beauty Concepts on Kickstarter!

Hi guys!

I wanted to write today about some really innovative beauty projects I’ve seen on Kickstarter. For those who don’t know, this is what Kickstarter is in their own words, “Kickstarter helps artists, musicians, filmmakers, designers, and other creators find the resources and support they need to make their ideas a reality. To date, tens of thousands of creative projects — big and small — have come to life with the support of the Kickstarter community.”

Kickstarter is awesome. Some projects just need some money and support to get off the ground! If you think about it – how do beauty brands start in the first place? When makeup artist and photographer, Frank Toskan and beauty salon owner, Frank Angel were frustrated with the lack of makeup colors available to them, they cooked up cosmetics in their own kitchen and sold them right from their beauty salon…it’s now known as MAC Cosmetics (MAYBE you’ve heard of it?) Another woman started her company with 4 skincare products developed in a kitchen (and later, in a lab) by her chemist uncle. The company is now a multi-billion dollar company that still bears her name – Estee Lauder.

There are many more inspiring stories like these. My point is – you gotta start somewhere, right? These are a few projects on Kickstarter that really caught my eye. Could one or more of these be the next big thing? Check em out!

Crowd Colour - Personalised Makeup Palettes
I think this is really cool. People nowadays LOVE options. They love being able to customize things in their lives to make it their own. Enter – Crowd Colour. They want to be “the worlds first, totally customisable beauty brand.” How would that work, you ask? Well – it’s actually pretty simple. Choose your palette size (3 choices) and completely design the cover yourself. Are endless possibilities running through your mind? Me too. Some neat art that you drew? A picture of your dog, maybe? Fave celeb? Here's a photo from their site with a few neat examples:

OK, so now that you picked your palette and cover – what’s next? In the future, you will be able choose what’s inside. The company states, “Future plans for Crowd Colour include the introduction of refill pans for eye, lips, face and brows.” All products will be magnetized on the bottom. So you’d be able to take your self-designed empty palette, and fill it with shadows, lip color, etc that are all YOUR colors. Going out after work? You have one palette that fits all your touch up needs. Going on vacation? Pack one palette that fits it all. I really dig this concept! See below for their Kickstarter link to learn more: Crowd Colour

MAPO® World's First Connected Beauty mask

Beauty masks are EVERYWHERE these days and come in various shapes, textures and mediums. Sheet masks, leave-on masks, wash-off masks, peel-off masks and now even the latest splash masks out of Asia. But something we have yet to see (until now) is what the company describes as "a fully personalized connected, multi-function and easy-to-use beauty mask." Huh? It took some reading into for me, and this diagram helped me to understand it better (taken from their Kickstarter page)

So basically this is like the Jetsons of face masks. Often times, I slap on a sheet mask or charcoal mask without really understanding what my skin needs. How can you really tell if your skin needs more moisture if you don't physically see any negative signs? SCIENCE, that's how. MAPO is almost like a FitBit for your skin. With such a big concentration on skincare these days, something like this could really blow up. It's already making waves on Kickstarter (as a staff favorite pick) and in reputable magazines like Allure, Marie Claire and others. Good luck to this futuristic product! Kickstarter page here: MAPO.

The BeautyBeam
This Kickstarter project solves an age old problem. Everywhere you go, there's different lighting. Often times, not so great lighting, which is bad news for makeup application. This product is a one size fits all mini light that best replicates natural lighting. It attaches to 1 million beauty products (according to the company) and helps you to see what your makeup REALLY looks like before you go outside. See below photo from the company's Kickstarter page:

I can see so many uses for this product - using it at my desk at work, in the car before a date night, every bathroom with crappy lighting, dark bars, the list goes on. Not to mention the commercial side of it - fashion shows, TV shows, the world of flawless makeup on instagram.

Using lights attached to beauty products isn't exactly a new concept - I actually have a Physician's Formula lip gloss that has a light built into the cap. However, it's not detachable. This product can be used on ANY lipstick, brush, eyeliner so that you're makeup is always looking fresh and blended. It's also cute, compact and comes in a variety of colors (because we love options!) Check out their Kickstarter page here: BeautyBeam

That's all for today! Thanks for reading and have a great Sunday!

I'm Not Deleting My Followers! It's Blogger's New Policy!

Hi guys. I’m writing to you today about Google Friend Connect and how Blogger’s policy has now changed. Apparently, in order to be a follower on my site using Google Friend Connect (or any Blogger site) you need to sign in with a Google account. If you don’t, the site removes you as a follower. This is something I have no control over and frankly, am pretty upset about.

At first I thought I was just losing followers because you guys were bored with me (WAH!) but after doing a little research, I found out it was happening to other bloggers as well. Just today, it looks like I lost 30 followers due to this change which is really a bummer for me. I've been writing for you guys for over 5 years now, and it took awhile to find my audience! Seeing my follower count deplete through no fault of my own really sucks.

Please see full statement from Blogger below, and if you happen to have a google account, sign in with your gmail so you won’t miss any awesome updates from me! As always, thanks for reading, I really appreciate your comments and love! XO

In 2011, we announced the retirement of Google Friend Connect for all non-Blogger sites. We made an exception for Blogger to give readers an easy way to follow blogs using a variety of accounts. Yet over time, we’ve seen that most people sign into Friend Connect with a Google Account. So, in an effort to streamline, in the next few weeks we’ll be making some changes that will eventually require readers to have a Google Account to sign into Friend Connect and follow blogs.

As part of this plan, starting the week of January 11, we’ll remove the ability for people with Twitter, Yahoo, Orkut or other OpenId providers to sign in to Google Friend Connect and follow blogs. At the same time, we’ll remove non-Google Account profiles so you may see a decrease in your blog follower count.

We encourage you to tell affected readers (perhaps via a blog post) that if they use a non-Google Account to follow your blog, they need to sign up for a Google Account, and re-follow your blog. With a Google Account, they’ll get blogs added to their Reading List, making it easier for them to see the latest posts and activity of the blogs they follow.

We know how important followers are to all bloggers, but we believe this change will improve the experience for both you and your readers.

Thank you,
Blogger support team

La Mer The Lip Balm

Hi guys! I'm writing today about La Mer The Lip Balm. The winter is finally upon us, which means fun stuff (like skiing and ice skating!!), but it also means dry skin and dry lips - the worst!!! I've always suffered from really dry lips in the winter, and will pretty much try anything.

This balm has been on my wish list for a while, but I just couldn't pull the trigger because of the price. It's $55. I know what you're thinking - it's a LIP BALM though!! You can get lip balms at the drugstore for a couple bucks!! Yes, you can. And I've tried a ton of them and a lot of them suck. So I started wondering - do I have to pay more for an upscale product to get the results I'm looking for? I know this is not always the case (the more expensive, the better the product) however this lip balm is truly upscale and fabulous.

The texture is waxy but in a rich, moisturizing type way. The smell is a bit minty which I love. Most mornings I will dab some on after I get out of the shower and let it sink in before doing my makeup. This balm has serious lasting power! Hours can go by and I can still feel the balm intact. It's very moisturizing and absolutely cuts down on cracking and flaking. Lip care in the winter is so important – if you lips are flakey and dry, every lip color will look terrible. A good lip balm and exfoliating a few times a week is a must! I also opt for creamy lipsticks and glosses vs. matte ones – matte lipsticks tend to be very drying. Anyway, I digress.

What’s the point of having a kick ass lip color collection (have you SEEN this madness?!) if your bare lips look like crap? At least that is how I’m justifying my purchase HAHA! I also started thinking of beauty products I WAS willing to pay a premium for – facial moisturizers, fancy serums, top shelf eye creams – why not give my lips the same care as the rest of my face? Just to make my purchase last a little longer, I alternate between La Mer’s lip balm and TONYMOLY Prestige Snail Lip Treatment which I also really like for $8 (review here).

Biore Self Heating One Minute Mask

Guysssss, hey!! I’m writing today about the Biore Self Heating One Minute Mask. I’ve consistently seen this product on top 10 lists, blogger favorites, best masks lists and so on. ALL of those people can’t be wrong, right? So the short answer is – they aren’t wrong. Longer answer is why I love it! It’s super simple to use - wet your face, dispense product into your hands and rub together, massage into your face for one minute and wash it off.

First thing I like – it’s a single serve mask. I am not a skincare freshness freak, however I can tell when masks in tubes or jars start getting old. The product starts drying out (especially charcoal) and there are like chunky little bits that get into the product. Who the F wants that slathered on their face?! Not me. The single serve is the way of the future and I am loving it. I also like throwing one in my overnight bag if I’m going away for the weekend or on vacation. It’s about 1/3 the size of a sheet mask – it practically takes up no room at all and makes a big impact on your skin.

Second – the sensation of this mask is unlike anything I’ve ever tried. I mean it. I try LOTS of masks and this one is very different from the rest. When I used it for the first time, I was not prepared for how intense the warming sensation was. Not that it’s so hot it will burn your face off, but a true, hearty warming sensation that feels oh so good. Especially in the winter months, it’s so comforting and happy. After massaging for one minute, and washing it off - BOOM. Another crazy sensation, but this time it’s a blast of COOL. After all the warming and massaging, I actually welcomed the cooling feeling. It also made me feel like I was washing away all the impurities down the drain – a fresh, clean start! This mask is legitimately a rollercoaster of emotions. The cooling effect actually lasts for a few minutes after it’s been washed off. I love this feeling. It makes your skin feel squeaky clean and pampered.

Third - It’s totally affordable and accessible. I got my pack at CVS for $8, and there are 4 single serves per pack. I am willing to pay more for a great mask, but luckily this one is a great price AND it works well. Score! Here’s the link to CVS, though they sell this mask in most drug stores and Ulta - Biore Self Heating One Minute Mask.

Lastly, it truly takes one minute. ONE MINUTE. Not a sheet mask that takes 20-30 minutes, not a regular wash off mask that takes 15 minutes to harden – ONE minute. As I said previously, don’t be fooled by the one minute – it’s an effective mask that packs a big punch.

That’s all I have for today! Thanks for reading, as always!

New Year, New Way to Organize Makeup!

Hi friends! My wonderful momma gifted me this AMAZING little turquoise cabinet for my makeup. At first she was second guessing herself, thinking, "is this a weird gift?" Once she gave it to me, I went home the same day and went into an organizing tailspin. Safe to say it was one of my favorite Christmas gifts!! Only beauty addicts would understand...

Previously, my makeup stuff was in a smallish, tabletop organizer. It was great - but I definitely outgrew it. Often times I had trouble even closing the drawers - makeup overload! Now that I have graduated into a big girl cabinet, I wanted to show off all my hard organizing work to you guys! Check out the photos below.

My beautiful new cabinet! It comes up to about my hip (i'm 5'2'')
My mom has the same one at home, and I always loved hers.
It even has wheels!

Lipgloss drawer
Does it look like I have a Laura Mercier Paint Wash Lip Colour problem?
After seeing all my glosses displayed like this, I can honestly say i'm not buying a new one any time soon...

Lipstick drawer
I love picking out what lip color I'm going to wear each day!
Guess I never realized how many lipsticks I have, since they used to be piled on top of each other.
I'm going to try and rotate through my lipsticks more, it's easy to get stuck in a rut and always wear the same few.

My Spill Over Lip Drawer
OK, so this is a problem. This is a mix of the glosses and lipsticks I couldn't fit in the original drawers.
I should have combed through my stuff more and thrown stuff out, but I was too excited to organize! #OCDproblems
I found a few drugstore lipsticks that weren't even opened yet!! Damn me.

Small eyeshadow drawer
Before, I reached for whatever eyeshadow was on top at the moment.
Now that I can see everything, I've been playing more with my makeup.
It's almost like getting new makeup! Almost.

Face and Accessories drawer
Foundations, highlighters, bronzers, concealers, tools, etc
I never realized how many highlighters I had until now, yikes.

Eye Pencils drawer
All my eye liners. I'm not allowing myself to buy any more of these for a long while too.
With the exception of the 2 above palettes, I didn't put any of my other palettes in these drawers.
There's too many and they take up too much room!
The 2 you see above are NEW (yay!) so I included them to remind myself to use them.
Also included are a few mascaras and lip pencils

And there you have it! I'm so happy with the way it turned out. Eventually, I will go through and do another dreaded makeup purge to free up some extra room. This is a classic case of having so much makeup that you forget what you have. Not anymore! I am going to make a conscious effort to keep this organized, wish me luck. Thanks for reading!

Radiant Everyday Makeup

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a great one.

I'm often asked what face makeup I wear and how I get the glowy, radiant look that is so popular today. Every makeup girl knows - the no-makeup makeup look requires, well, a lot of makeup. The good news is that if you take care of your skin regularly, it will pay off and you'll need less foundation/base makeup. The key to this look is the appearance of smooth, healthy, plump skin. Fake it till you make it, baby!

Now, onto the good stuff. This is the makeup I do pretty much every day. I'll change up my lip color and eye makeup depending on the occasion, but all else basically stays the same (especially for work when i'm pressed for time). The order of the products in each category is the order that I apply them!

Face - Skincare (Morning Routine, in order)

  • Face serum - I alternate, but I like Clinique Smart serum or Origins Dr. Weil Mega-Bright serum.
  • Moisturizer - I've been using Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel or Simple Ultra-Light Gel moisturizer.
  • Sunscreen - Laura Mercier Flawless Skin sunscreen
  • Eye Cream - Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging eye cream
  • La Mer The Lip Balm

Face - Makeup

  • Clinique Superprimer Color Corrects Dullness
  • Laneige BB Cushion (Medium)
  • First Aid Beauty Eye Duty Triple Remedy - under eyes
  • Maybelline Treatment Concealer in Honey - let above sink in, then apply this under eyes where needed
  • Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage - for blemish or red spots, if needed
  • Neutrogena Shine Control Powder invisible 10 - I use this to combat shine on my t zone throughout the day. Works like a charm.
Cheeks
  • Laura Mercier Candleglow Luminizing Palette - Radiance, Glimmer Luminizing Face Power
  • Maybelline Dream Bouncy blush
  • L'Oreal True Match Lumi in C301 - top of cheekbones and cupid's bow

Brows
  • For maintenance - Tweezerman tweezers
  • For a touch of tint - Benefit Gimme Brow in Medium/Deep

Eyes

  • Sephora eye lash curler
  • MAC Prolongwear Paint Pot in Perky -great eyeshadow base or wear it alone
  • Estee Lauder Doublewear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil in Pink Gold - this is a great product. I use this in my waterline and the inner corners of my eyes. Instantly wakes up your eyes.
  • Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Rosegold - I line my top lid/lash line with this. It's either this natural look or a black cat eye with the Kat von D Tattoo Liner.
  • Clinique Chubby Lash Fattening Mascara in Massive Midnight - It's a navy color and gives the slightest bit of perk to your eyes.

Lips

  • Exfoliate - I do this a few times a week, especially in the colder months. Instead of buying an expensive exfoliator, I make my own with brown sugar and honey. I keep the mixture in a washed out eye cream jar and it works like a charm. Be sure to apply a balm or Vaseline before exfoliating.
  • For some color - Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Color in Coral Reef - currently my favorite shade. I'm a huge fan of the Paint Washs and have them in many colors. This particular shade really compliments my skin tone and looks natural without looking too made up.
And that's it! I took the photos in this post today, no flash and obviously no filters or editing. Hope you enjoyed!
